White House nears deal on health care
Quote:
The agreement, forged in a marathon negotiating session that included White House officials and seven prominent labor leaders, would exempt union members from a proposed surtax on expensive insurance plans until 2018

How can anyone support these clowns anymore? Whether you're anti-union or not, making special tax breaks available only to people who happen to be in unions is an affront to the idea of equality under the law.

Pretty sure no one on here supports these clowns anymore.

They've taken the House Bill which was the closest thing we were going to get to Universal coverage (and it wasn't even that close) and hacked and carved it down to nothing and then added on a bunch of ridiculous shit through backroom deals and shady deals that seem to only help a very select few in the state of Nebraska.

For awhile I was thinking "Well something is better than nothing" but now it's just absolutely fucking stupid and no one can blame the republicans for this. The democrats fucked it up all on their own.

And the Blue Dog democrats who made this what it is need to be voted out in the fall and replaced by republicans who at least showed some fucking solidarity. They need to be fired so they can go back to their home state and spend time thinking that they stood in the way of progress, still lost, and now their constituents have nothing to show for it. Fuck these people.

I still think there's enough good in there to justify passing it, and worry that too many progressives are letting perfection be the enemy of good. It can always be revised later, but right now it still prevent insurance companies from denying coverage, cutting off coverage, and places limits on premiums.

I'm not expecting perfection, but goddammit, you have a good enough majority in the a House, a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, and a president who wanted a public option, and still they can't get shit done.

Yeah, I know, but a lot of progressive programs started off small and shitty and got expanded. See: social security.

BBC has a show up trying to explain to the rest of the world why Americans are so angry about a government program that would help them. It's called "Turkeys Voting for Christmas."

I love how we're being used as a cautionary tale. "It could happen in Britain!"

U.S. Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., twice on Monday took credit for blocking Democrats' comprehensive changes to the nation's health care system.

"If I hadn't been a part of the debate, you would already have universal health care," Enzi told local business leaders at a Casper Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon Monday.

Thanks Mike, you're a real pal.

Limbaugh promises to leave the country if health care passes. This really should be all the incentive we need.

The problem is, he's promising to leave if his distorted interpetation of the plan is enacted, which it won't because that's not the plan. Sort of like a creationist saying they'll believe in evolution if scientists can prove that we evolved from chimps.

Fuck you, Democrats.

That crusty thing that you just used to wipe your asses? Oh, that was the Constitution.

Explain to me EXACTLY what about the health care bill violates the Constitution. I'm honestly curious.

ahahahahaha

You know, this bill isn't all that different from conservative plans that have been offered in the past (Nixon, Romney, McCain), but don't let that get in the way of a good tantrum.

ahahahahaha

Well, there's Article I, Section 8 which details all the powers which are delegated to the federal government. If you'll read it you'll notice there's not one word about health care, health insurance, forcing people to buy it, etc... Then there's the tenth amendment which explicitly denies to the federal government any powers not delegated to it by the Constitution.

QED.

Sigh

Quote:
Section 8: The Congress shall have power To lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises, to pay the debts and provide for the common defence and general welfare of the United States; but all duties, imposts and excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

Which means any exercise of power pursuant to the enumerated list after that clause must be done in the general welfare. Shit, if "general welfare" was a grant of power why even list the stuff after it? Why include the tenth amendment if "general welfare" was a broad, effectively unlimited grant of power? How does "general welfare" square with the notion that the powers delegated to the federal government "are few and defined" (Madison, Federalist 45) if it is a grant of power?

The general welfare clause was not a grant of power, but another restriction on it.
