Thought this was interesting and I know Amber and Aric once had one as a pet. Unfortunately, around here, they're used as target practice. Excuses are made that they are pests, but none of them really hold any water.

With a single bark, he says, a prairie dog may warn about the type and direction of an encroaching predator, and even describe its colour.

If confirmed, that means the chattering rodents communicate in a more complex way than even monkeys or dolphins.

Petey scared the crap out of Amber and I the first time he did his greeting yelp at us. We went out and bought a book to try and figure out what the hell he was doing.

Yea, Petey definitely had an interesting little array of noises. Many of them were a bit unexpected, coming from a rodent.

I was out with the drilling crew last week and a coyote popped up out of the grass and went cruising through a prairie dog town. Needless to say, the place was a chirping madhouse.

You can kind of make out the prairie dogs in the background standing up.

And here's some of the coyote a little more close up.
